The Synecdoche sofa design for the large open living room space of this weekend home is a custom-made site-specific installation. Made in movable parts the sofa seating units can be rearranged to create alternative seating arrangements as per the need of the space, to create a ‘whole’ composition. This integrated modular design of the Synecdoche sofa allows for numerous permutations in usage and spatial arrangements. In the L-shaped arrangement as seen in the drawings and images, the two-sided seats with low backrest open the sofa onto the adjacent areas of dining and open lounge bar area. Thus, during parties alternate interesting seating clusters can be made around the sofa. The upholstered seats are punctuated with floating shelves as side tables, incorporated into the design. The floating sofa is supported on slender metal framework which makes it look as if it is lifted off the white marble floor. The integrated side tables also follow the similar language. Upholstered in soft vegan leather, the comfortable sofa seat is flexible in form and sits lightly on the ground.
